Lionel 238E Vintage O Pennsylvania Torpedo Streamlined Steam Locomotive & Tender VG

This is a Lionel 238E 4-4-2 Streamlined Steam Locomotive & 265W Tender from 1936-38. The locomotive features metal construction, a motor, a reverse unit, an operating headlight, a smoke unit, metal side rods, metal wheels and exquisite detail. The tender features box couplers, metal journals, metal trucks, and metal wheels.

Originally introduced in 1880 in the UK, the "Atlantic" or 4-4-2 would rise to prominence around the world in little to no time after its introduction. Respected and beloved around the world from the United States to Mozambique, the 4-4-2 found itself commissioned in various rail-yards across several continents. In the United States the 4-4-2 would be called the "Milwaukee “due to it running on the Milwaukee rail-road, but most would find that the "Atlantic" just rolled off the tongue a little bit better. In its construction the 4-4-2 saw an advantage over other locomotives thanks to its trailing wheels allowing for a deeper firebox in the driving wheels. Most of the Atlantic models would see their time in the spotlight come to an end, and would eventually go out of commission in the mid-20th century. Today handfuls exist in preservation status in various rail-road museums.

This item has been graded per TCA standards C-6: Very Good based on visual appearance. The locomotive operates and illuminates when powered, but the tender struggles to whistle when powered. There are spots of rust present on the tender, primarily on the couplers and on the coal platform. There are nicks and scratches on the surface of the shells and chassis of both the locomotive and the tender. The wheels show average use. The overall appearance of this item may be improved with a gentle and thorough cleaning. The original box is not included. Please check the photos for a detailed look at this item. Overall condition is Very Good.
